Wagner College Congratulates Terry Mulligan

Wagner College Congratulates Terry Mulligan

January 20, 2012

Wagner College congratulates Terry Baker Mulligan ’66 on the release of her newly published memoir, “Sugar Hill: Where the Sun Rose Over Harlem.”

Using Harlem’s famous cultural institutions and memorable characters as her backdrop, Mulligan writes joyously about weathering adolescence while history unfolds around her in the legendary neighborhood called Sugar Hill. This feel-good story resonates with hu-mor, warmth and wisdom as Mulligan chronicles her life among flamboyant evangelists, curly-haired Doo-Wop boys, snuff-dippers, Fidel Castro’s entourage, interracial marriages, chitlin’ parties and testy interactions between West Indian immigrants and Southern blacks.
Mulligan’s book already has a fan on Grymes Hill: Wagner College Provost Lily McNair.
“Terry’s account of life on Sugar Hill is so vivid and lifelike,” McNair says, “I can literally see her interacting with her grandmother, mother, and friends in the neighborhood!”

Mulligan will read from her new book and sign copies at two events scheduled for Friday, Feb. 17:

  • 12 to 2 p.m. at City College’s Shepherd Hall, Room S-250, 160 Convent Ave., Harlem, Manhattan
  • 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hue-Man Bookstore, 2319 Frederick Douglass Blvd. (between 124th and 125th streets), Harlem, Manhattan
